The Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale has announced their musical programming for their 60th ‘Diamond Anniversary’ Season Celebration with a new change, according to a recent press release:
Beginning July 1, the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale will become the West Texas Symphony. Through the talent and dedication of over a hundred professional musicians, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Gary Lewis, West Texas Symphony will continue to provide performances that enhance the quality of life for West Texas residents. “We are thrilled to have the support of our local community and patrons to bring a 60th season to West Texas! We offer an innovative concert lineup, new brand, and focused vision! These developments will not only honor our mission but will better reflect who we serve. Our organization’s structure will remain the same with 8 main stage concerts, 6 chamber concerts, 3 choral events, and music education outreach programs.” Ethan Wills, Executive Director, said.
The Masterworks Series features cherished symphonic compositions. In September, the season kicks off with Your West Texas Symphony, a concert celebrating the legacy and future of the organization. In November, hear Sibelius Symphony, No. 2 paired with a Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, with featured violinist Fiona Shea. Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 is paired with von Weber’s Bassoon Concerto in F Major in February featuring WTS’ principal bassoonist Philip Hill. At the April Masterworks finale, the orchestra will rock Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 alongside pianist Caroline Hong and feature special side-by-side performance with members from local music programs and the UTPB Orchestra.
Specially designed for fresh pop perspectives, the Pops & Family Series features a show-stopping lineup for the whole family! Always a Texas favorite, in October the symphony will welcome back Asleep at the Wheel! In December, the orchestra presents one of West Texas’ greatest holiday traditions, Sounds of the Season to ring in the Yuletide cheer. In March don’t miss one of the most notable jazz saxophonists of current times, Brad Leali, a novel collaboration with the West Texas Jazz Society. Finishing the season is Back to the Future In Concert where the orchestra will perform the thrilling movie score live to the film! For over half a century, the West Texas Symphony has presented world-class guest artists, to beloved classical composers, and fun family experiences. There is truly something for everyone.
