OC tax increase hearings

Odessa College trustees are proposing a $.17688 per $100 tax rate for the coming tax year. OC will hold required public hearings at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and at noon Sept. 16 on the increase in property taxes at the Saulsbury Campus Center Room 128.

The proposed rate is greater than the no new revenue tax rate, which means an increase of 3.04 percent.

The tax rate of $0.171666 last year for 2023 was a decrease of 9 percent from the 2022 tax rate of $0.188643, according to information from Odessa College.

The tax rate for 2024, if approved, would then still be 6 percent less than the tax rate for 2022. We feel that this is also an important fact for the community to know as we consider the tax rate for this coming year, the information said.

Odessa College also has a proposed bond election on the November ballot for $355 million to be used for a new sports center, career and technical building and to repurpose the Jack Rodgers Fine Arts building into a childcare center and for the downtown campus.

If approved by voters the bond will increase OC property taxes about $30 a month on a $334,000 home in Odessa. That is about $360 year more than what homeowners are already paying. The average taxable value of a home in Ector County is $167,140 based on certified numbers OC received July 25. That home tax rate would increase about $15 per month if the bond passes.
