‘Con Cariño’ by Guadalupe Hernandez hosted by the Ellen Noël Art Museum

The Ellen Noël Art Museum of the Permian Basin will host “Con Cariño” by Guadalupe Hernandez from Aug. 23-Dec. 1 at 4919 E. University Blvd.

With this exhibition, Hernandez examines the themes of family, labor, and cultural practices through a series of paintings and works of cut paper inspired by Papel Picado. “Con Cariño,” which translates to “with love” or “with care,” is an homage to his parents who abandoned their homeland in search of a brighter future for their family. The works in this show link together fragments of their journey and the various forms of labor they undertook to provide their children with opportunities they were denied.

“Con Cariño” by Guadalupe Hernandez is just one of the many free programs offered by the Ellen Noël Art Museum which serve the Permian Basin community of all ages and backgrounds.

A few of Hernandez’s most recent accomplishments include the Nest Heritage Craft Prize for his efforts to preserve and push forward the Mexican folk art tradition of Papel Picado, and being a visiting artist for the Art Students League of Denver. He was also notably among six pairs of visual artists in the 2022 U.S. Latinx Art Forum Mentorship Program, supporting an intergenerational skill exchange. Hernandez has also participated in artist residencies with institutions such as the Asia Society Texas Center and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
