MIDLAND September was Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity and inspire action to combat hunger, and Atmos Energy is donating $2 million to food banks across the eight states it serves, which will help provide food security for the natural gas company’s neighbors in need.
Food banks play a critical role in caring for vulnerable populations that face food supply inadequacy and nutritional instability, while also offering essential services such as nutrition education, advocacy, and assistance programs that address the root causes of hunger. Providing these nonprofit organizations with resources to collect, store, and distribute food to those in need is an essential part of Atmos Energy’s Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities initiative, a news release said.
“It takes significant resources to fight hunger and address nutritional instability, so the goal of these dollars is to aid food banks who coordinate with local charities, schools, churches, and shelters to support individuals and families struggling to afford basic necessities,” Brandi Price, Atmos Energy vice president of public affairs, said in the release. “As Atmos Energy continues Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities, we are extremely proud to partner with the West Texas Food Bank and further their mission of collecting, purchasing, and distributing food to feed the hungry in West Texas.”
Among the hundreds of food banks that Atmos Energy supports, the West Texas Food Bank will receive $48,000 which will provide a food pantry at Big Spring High School for three years.
“We’re thrilled to provide vital support to Big Spring students, made possible by the incredible partnership with Atmos Energy,” said Libby Stephens, CEO of the West Texas Food Bank. “As the cost of living rises, so does the need for emergency food assistance. This collaboration allows us to make a meaningful impact, ensuring that families and individuals have access to the nourishment they need when they need it most.”
Hunger Action Month, a national campaign established by Feeding America in 2008, aims to educate the public about the widespread issue of hunger and encourage individuals, communities, and businesses to act by volunteering, donating, or advocating for policy change. Hunger Awareness Month is an important opportunity for communities to come together and make a positive impact on the lives of those struggling with hunger and food insecurity.
