HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Odessa High closes out season with three-set win against Permian

This time, the Odessa High volleyball team didn’t need five sets.

In crosstown rivalry part II, the Lady Bronchos once again defeated Permian this season, winning in three sets Tuesday at Permian Fieldhouse.

Odessa High won by scores of 25-23, 25-12 25-17.

“We knew that coming in, Permian is a really good team,” Odessa High head coach Cody Dominguez said. “They came out swinging and wanted revenge. We just got ready to battle. I’m glad that everyone showed up.”

It was the season finale for both teams as the Lady Panthers and the Lady Bronchos had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

Odessa High finished the season in fifth place in the District 2-6A standings at 19-18 overall, 2-8 in district while the Lady Panthers finished sixth at 21-17, 0-10.

“Odessa High just served us tough,” Permian head coach Gillian Herrera said. “They came out and hungry for the win.”

Odessa High won the last meeting against Permian in five sets back on Oct. 11 at OHS Fieldhouse.

Permian began the first set on a 6-1 run.

Odessa High battled back and took a 24-22 lead.

However, neither team refused to concede as the first set remained tight.

The Lady Bronchos closed out with a 25-23 win and the 1-0 lead.

“I think a lot of it was our nerves,” Dominguez said. “I think we were a little anxious but we cleaned up the mistakes.”

Odessa High kept up its momentum early in the second set, beginning things on a 4-0 run.

OHS soon made it 14-5 as the Lady Bronchos stayed in front.

It wasn’t long before Odessa High made it 23-10.

The Lady Bronchos remained in front and took a 25-12 win and a 2-0 lead.

Odessa High continued its surge in the third set and built a 17-10 lead against Permian.

An error by the Lady Panthers soon made it 19-12 for Odessa High.

Odessa High went on a 6-5 run to close out the set, the game and the season.

“I challenged our girls coming into this game,” Dominguez said. “I challenged them and told them that I didn’t want to take this to five. I wanted to take this in three. I challenged them to come out as a team and just finish.”
