HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Crosstown rivalry look back

Editor’s note: This is the sixth (and last) in a series of look backs at the previous 65 years of the crosstown rivalry between Odessa High and Permian.

This one is a look back at the 2010s (and one from this current decade).

2010- Odessa High 38, Permian 21

Odessa High Bronchos began the new decade the same way they ended the old one- by defeating Permian and advancing to the playoffs.

After defeating Permian 26-7 in 2009, the Bronchos once again got the final laugh against their crosstown rivals with a 38-21 victory.

Trailing 21-17 after the third quarter, Odessa High used a late rally, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Odessa High’s Bradley Marquez rushed for 201 yard from 24 carries.

The Bronchos would go on to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year, finishing 5-6 while Permian missed out after going 4-6.

2009-10 still remains the last time Odessa High has won back-to-back crosstown rivalries.

Two fourth quarter touchdowns from the Panthers helped give Permian a 36-29 win after losing two in a row to the Bronchos.

Permian’s Van Powell scored on a screen pass for an 85-yard touchdown with 1:27 left in the game to give Permian the win.

Permian quarterback Kacey Ryan came off the bench to lead a pair of scoring drives after the Bronchos had taken a 29-21 lead on Kevin Galindo’s 40-yard field goal with 5:42 remaining in the game.

The Panthers were able to clinch a playoff spot while Odessa High ended up missing out after a 31-14 loss to Midland Lee the following week.

2013- Odessa High 31, Permian 28

It was another case of both teams going back and forth.

In the end, Odessa High kicker Bryan Altamirano booted a 25-yard field goal with 10.8 seconds remaining to give the Bronchos their first win over the Panthers in three years.

Permian had a 15-7 halftime lead before Odessa High responded with two touchdowns in the third quarter to go up 21-15 heading into the fourth.

From there, both teams traded scores as neither wanted to concede.

Permian’s Matt Molinar caught a desperation pass along the sideline as the game expired but couldn’t stay in bounds as he stepped out on the Odessa High 8-yard line.

Odessa High finished the year 6-6, advancing to the area round of the playoffs.

To this date, 2013 is the last time Odessa High has made the postseason.

This was also the final time that both teams played at the Class 5A level.

2014- Permian 17, Odessa High 14

In the first year of Class 6A, Permian squeaked by with a 17-14 win that sent the Panthers to the playoffs.

Leading 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter, Permian’s Taylor Thompson hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Heath Wood to give the Panthers some cushion.

However, Odessa High made things interesting with a 3-yard run by Sebastian Galindo for a touchdown with 57 seconds remaining.

The Bronchos were unable to recover the onside kick and Permian was able to clinch a postseason spot with one game to spare in the regular season.

2023- Odessa High 49, Permian 42

It took nine attempts for Odessa High to finally get another victory against Permian but the wait was worth it in the end.

In a battle that more than lived up to its billing, Odessa High won in overtime against Permian for the first time since 2013.

Odessa High quarterback Mikey Cota went 18-of-29 for 399 yards passing and five touchdowns while Andrew Rodriguez had five catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Ivan Carreon had four receptions for 94 yards.

Both offenses had an answer but it was Odessa High’s Izek Lujan who scored on a 9-yard touchdown reception to send the game into overtime.

Dae Dae Green scored the game-winning touchdown on a 8-yard run.
