HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: OHS comes up short against Wolfforth Frenship

The Odessa High volleyball team’s bid for a massive upset against Wolfforth Frenship came up one set short.

In the end, it was the Lady Tigers that survived.

Wolfforth Frenship won in a five-set thriller against Odessa High Tuesday at OHS Fieldhouse, winning by scores of 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 15-9.

The Lady Tigers improved to 22-14 overall and 2-2 in District 2-6A play.

“I’m very proud of the way we were able to respond,” Frenship head coach Amy Mangum said. “We were able to come together and play hard through the ups and downs and I was proud that we were able to finish it.”

Odessa High fell to 17-14, 0-4.

“It’s a game that I wish we could’ve taken,” Odessa High head coach Cody Dominguez said. “We’re at a point where we’re about to play everyone again in district so I wish we could’ve taken this one because we had them on the ropes.”

Odessa High took a 17-11 lead in the first set.

It was 24-14 soon after.

A kill by Frenship’s Hadlee Welch kept the set alive at 24-15.

On each of the next two plays, the Lady Tigers had a block that brought them to a seven-point deficit.

However, OHS would hang on and take the set as Clarissa Deleon’s kill made it 1-0.

“Starting each set, we were able to push into setting the tone and we’ve been trying to have that lead and continue it and build confidence.” Dominguez said. “We want to be that aggressive team that doesn’t let up.”

Odessa High began the second set on a promising note, building a 10-6 lead before Frenship called a timeout.

The Lady Tigers then used a 4-0 run to tie things up.

An error on the following play put the Lady Bronchos ahead.

Frenship then went on another 4-0 run to take a 14-11 advantage.

The Lady Tigers managed to stay in front and soon had a 21-16 lead.

Odessa High didn’t go away and soon only trailed 23-19.

A block by Odessa High’s Aubrie Gonzalez then made it 23-20.

However, the Lady Tigers managed to close out the set with a 2-0 run to tie the game up.

Odessa High used another good run to begin the third set, taking a 6-3 lead.

A serve error by the Lady Tigers gave OHS a 7-4 advantage shortly after.

Frenship battled back and took a 13-12 lead.

Odessa High then went on a 6-3 run to take an 18-16 lead.

OHS took a 21-18 shortly after.

The Lady Bronchos continued to take advantage of errors from the Lady Tigers and soon had a four-point lead before Frenship took a timeout.

Odessa High stayed in front and took the set, 25-18.

OHS took a 3-2 lead early in the fourth set.

Frenship, however, took a 12-10 lead.

The set remained close as OHS only trailed 17-15.

A block by Odessa High’s Gabriela Padron brought the Lady Bronchos to a one-point deficit.

However, the Lady Tigers used a 3-0 run to take a 20-16 lead before Odessa High called a timeout.

Frenship stayed in front and took a 25-19 win and force a fifth set.

Consecutive kills by Padron gave the Lady Bronchos a 3-1 lead.

Odessa High soon had a 7-4 lead.

Frenship responded with a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 lead before a timeout was called.

Frenship kept up its momentum, taking an 11-7 lead.

The Lady Tigers were not to be denied and survived the fifth set and the match.

“That 5-0 run was very crucial,” Mangum said. “Jaycee Garza was able to step up and serve very well and our defense stepped up in the last two sets. We started doing everything right.”

Odessa High will next face Permian at 5 p.m. Friday at home.
