San Angelo Central’s volleyball team proved to be too much as the District 2-6A leaders took a win in straight sets against Permian Tuesday at Permian Fieldhouse.
The Lady Cats won by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-20.
Playing in the second game in district competition, the Lady Cats improved to 22-2 overall and 2-0 in District 2-6A play.
“I’m just grateful that we got the win,” San Angelo Central head coach Julie Williams said. “The last two times we’ve been here, it’s been a dog fight. It was a goal for us to come here and be more consistent on our side of the court. Every night we play is going to be a battle. I’m thankful to walk out of here with a win and with it being a 3-0 victory, I think that’s a huge improvement from the last two years.”
The Lady Panthers fell to 21-9, 0-2.
“We did some good things but we have to continue to work on some things as well and get better throughout district,” Permian head coach Gillian Herrera said.
Fresh off a five-set victory against District 2-6A contender Wolfforth Frenship, San Angelo Central showed why it was destined for a deep playoff run this season.
“I think if anything, there was a lot to learn from that win,” Williams said. “We didn’t hit very well so that was something we wanted to improve on tonight and that’s what we did. I think it was good considering that every game in this district is tough.”
Permian’s Bridgit Smithee led the team in kills with 14 while Mylah Arzaga had seven.
The Lady Cats’ only losses so far this season have come against Canyon and Midland Christian during the month of August.
San Angelo Central took a comfortable lead in the first set before hanging on for a 25-19 win.
The Lady Cats took a 3-0 lead early in the second set.
A serve error gave San Angelo Central a 4-1 lead soon after.
It wasn’t long until the Lady Cats had a 12-4 advantage.
Things wouldn’t get any easier for Permian and San Angelo Central had a 20-6 lead.
An error from the Lady Cats helped the Lady Panthers to a 21-8 deficit.
A kill by San Angelo Central’s Emilee Sikora made it 22-8 on the following play.
The visitors closed out the set and take a 2-0 advantage.
San Angelo Central continued its run into the third set, taking a 7-3 lead.
Permian went on a 7-3 run to tie things up at 10-10.
San Angelo Central went on a 6-1 run to take control of the set.
Permian would battle back to a 21-18 deficit.
“It’s always easier to play ahead than from behind,” Herrera said. “We managed to tie the game up but we have to eliminate our errors.”
However, it wouldn’t be enough as San Angelo Central closed out the set with a 25-20 win and the sweep.
San Angelo Central will next face Odessa High at 5 p.m. Friday in San Angelo.
Permian will next be at home against Wolfforth Frenship at 5 p.m. Friday at Permian Fieldhouse.
