HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Permian survives against Amarillo Tascosa

The Permian football team continued its undefeated start to the season with a 50-48 win against Amarillo Tascosa Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

The Panthers moved to 4-0 while the Rebels fell to 1-3.

Permian at one point trailed by 14 points in the second half but fought back and managed to avoid defeat.

Tascosa’s only win so far has been against Wichita Falls Legacy.

The Rebels were coming off a 27-7 loss to Lubbock Cooper while Permian survived a 42-37 win against Abilene High last week.

Permian running back Gavin Black rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns off 32 carries.

Permian quarterback Jakob Garcia went 6-of-10 for 59 yards.

Tascosa’s quarterback Coltyn Fulton went 6-of-12 for 159 yards and threw three touchdowns with one interception.

Wide receiver TJ Tillman had four receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

It only took Permian 12 seconds to find the end zone, scoring on a kickoff return by Alexx Cruz on a 52-yard run and Jayden Lopez’s extra-point made it 7-0.

Tascosa had a response in the form of a touchdown pass from Fulton for a 60-yard touchdown and Charlie Whitternberg’s PAT was good to tie it up with 10:27 left in the first quarter.

Gavin Black scored on a 14-yard run to put Permian back in front with 8:35 left.

The Rebels responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Fulton to Josiah Fields with 4:52 left.

Caleb Jamison scored on a 22-yard run and Lopez’s PAT made it 21-14 late in the quarter.

Johnson’s 49-yard run was Tascosa’s answer, early in the second quarter.

However, the two-point conversion pass was incomplete and the Panthers stayed in front with 11:43 left.

Black’s six-yard run helped Permian to a 28-20 lead.

However, Tascosa would score 15-unanswered points to take a 35-28 halftime lead.

Things wouldn’t get easier for Permian as Tascosa’s Iker Munoz returned the kickoff 60-yards for a touchdown to begin the second half.

Black scored on an eight-yard run and the Panthers got the two-point conversion on a pass from Garcia to Landon Robles.

Another Black touchdown, this time from two-yards out, helped the Panthers to a 44-42 lead with 1:04 left in the third quarter.

Permian added another touchdown with Garcia hooking up with John Paul Uranga on a seven-yard pass to make it 50-42.

Tascosa scored on a run by Charlie McKinney. The two-point conversion run by McKinney came up short and Permian stayed in front with 3:59 left in the game.

The Panthers would run out the clock and hang on for the win.

Permian will next face Carver High School out of Birmingham, Ala. at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Ratliff Stadium.

Tascosa will face Lubbock Coronado to begin district play.
