Police: Man uses box cutter in assault

An Odessa man was arrested early Tuesday morning after his former girlfriend accused him of cutting her with a box cutter.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers responded to the 1200 block of West 23rd Street around 11 p.m. Monday night about an assault. When officers arrived, a woman told them she’d been at her mother’s home on Brentwood Drive when her former boyfriend, Osniel Garcia, arrived.

She said Garcia was holding a box cutter when he accused her of talking to someone else. She said he then grabbed her phone and when she tried to take the phone back, he pushed her away several times, causing her to fall and hurt her ankle.

According to the report, the woman said Garcia put the box cutter up to her ear, extended the blade and cut her right ear before sliding the phone back to her and leaving.

Officers observed injuries to the woman’s ankle and ear, the report stated.

The officers found Garcia at his home on East 35th Street and he denied assaulting her, the report stated. He also said his former girlfriend dropped the phone and he slid it back to her.

Garcia was arrested and booked into the Ector County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief. His bond was set at $26,000.
