Trooper, deputy injured in accident

Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis said a Department of Public Safety Trooper and one of his deputies were injured Tuesday on Highway 302 near Notrees.

The unnamed trooper was initially transported to Medical Center Hospital but later airlifted to a Lubbock area hospital. The DPS in a news release detailed he is in serious but stable condition.

Griffis said the accident occurred between 8:30 and 9 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 302, just east of Notrees.

The deputy was assisting DPS with traffic control following an accident.

ECSO Deputy Justin Toombs had angled his unit, with emergency lights activated, to divert traffic to the inside lane. A westbound Cadillac struck Deputy Toombs’ unit and a nearby DPS Trooper was injured.

Toombs, the trooper and driver of the Cadillac were all transported by ambulance to MCH ER. “Deputy Toombs is stable. I’m certain that information on the trooper and driver of the Cadillac will be released at a later time. I will add that prayers have been answered so far, and do ask they continue to flow,” Griffis said via text.
