MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: RockHounds drop home opener against Corpus Christi Hooks

MIDLAND The Midland RockHounds made consistent contact at bat in their home opener, but couldn’t drive in enough runs against the Corpus Christi Hooks.

That resulted in an 11-4 loss Tuesday at Momentum Bank Ballpark.

Grae Kessinger reached home on a throwing error at first base to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead early.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the third that the RockHounds responded with a line drive single from Kyle McCann that drove in Max Schuemann to tie things up.

The Hooks took control with six unanswered runs, seeing their advantage grow to 7-1 with an RBI single from Yainer Diaz in the top of the seventh.

A surge in the bottom of the frame gave the RockHounds some signs of life, as they brought the deficit down to three runs.

McCann drove Schuemann in again with a double to left field, then Devin Foyle brought McCann in with an infield single to second base.

Jordan Diaz scored Foyle with an RBI single to center field, proving to be the final run the RockHounds scored.

The Hooks tacked on another four unanswered runs, closing out the scoring with a two-run homer from Cesar Salazar in the top of the ninth.

The RockHounds (2-2 overall) recorded 15 hits in the contest, while Corpus Christi had 13.

The series between the teams will continue at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
