Odessans for Education to kick off canvassing efforts

Odessans for Education will be kicking off their volunteer door-to-door neighborhood canvassing efforts for the May 7 Ector County ISD bond election Saturday (April 9) at the Complex Community Credit Union Operations & Training Building, 4519 E. 51st St.

Community volunteers are invited to join. Coffee and training will be provided.

The event will kick off with coffee at 9 a.m.; training at 9:15 a.m. and canvassing starting at 9:30 a.m.

A news release said Odessans for Education supports the passage of Propositions A and B. The total bond amount is $398,255,000.

Proposition A for $215,255,000 includes maintenance and life-cycle repairs/replacement for school district buildings ($130,255,000); construction of a new Career & Technical Education (CTE) Center ($70 million); and classroom technology upgrades ($15 million).

Proposition B for $183,000,000 is for a new comprehensive high school designed for 2,500 to 2,800 students.

District leaders anticipate this bond will create a tax rate increase of 15-cents and, for a home with a taxable value of $100,000, would equate to a tax increase of approximately $12 per month. There would be no tax increase on residence homesteads for taxpayers 65 and older, as state law dictates that the tax rate and the amount paid, on a residence, are frozen when that person turns 65 years old, applies for the exemption and is approved by the Ector County Appraisal District. ECISD gives local taxpayers a 20% Homestead Exemption, which is the maximum allowed by law.

Early Voting for the May 7, 2022, election will run from April 25 through May 3, and be held only at the Ector County Courthouse Annex, 1010 E. Eighth St.

In addition to the volunteer kickoff on April 9, community members can volunteer on April 23 and April 30. Community members can also volunteer to knock on doors in their home neighborhood during any time that works best for their schedules from now through the May 7 election.
