OFR: Homeless camp likely caused Monday fire

An investigator with Odessa Fire Rescue has determined a fire that destroyed three homes on Blue Drive Feb. 28 was likely caused by homeless people living in a field behind the homes.

According to reports released Friday, investigators found a campfire area with lighter fluid, along with a glass pipe, discarded cans, bottles, food, pans and tables.

“It was found that the fire started in this area and spread to the fence and three residences prior to being extinguished. No witnesses or suspects were found on the scene that could identify the parties involved in the fire,” the investigator wrote. “The fire is ruled as arson at this time due to the fact that they started a fire on property that did not belong to them and damaged (property) belonging to others.”

No one was injured in the blaze, but the three homes were 75% damaged, according to the report. Each of the homes was valued at $185,000-$214,500 and the renters lost anywhere from $85,500 to $99,000 in contents.

More than 30 firefighters responded to the fire, which was located near 52nd Street and Andrews Highway.
