HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Permian hopes to capitalize on last year’s playoff run

A long run in the playoffs was important to the development of many players on the Permian baseball team last season.

Most of Permian’s roster consisted of juniors now heading into their final year of high school eligibility, looking to repeat their performances and claim another District 2-6A championship.

Xavier Melendez said experience was something the Panthers lacked last year, but it will be a key factor if they want to have success in 2022.

“I think it’s going to be a great year, everybody here has put in a lot of work through the whole offseason,” Melendez said. “It shows out on the field.”

The Panthers had one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2021, going 23-7 in regular season play and making it to the third round of the Class 6A playoffs where they fell in three games against Southlake Carroll.

Permian baseball coach Tate Criswell believes his team is getting stronger because of what each player saw as the campaign moved forward.

Despite losing high-impact players like Teo Banks, Criswell believes this year’s squad is ready for the challenges it will face.

“Experience is key in whatever you’re doing in life,” Criswell said. “I think we’ve got that now, for the most part.

“A lot of the guys that weren’t on the field, in between the lines last year during those games were in the dugout, so they were there.”

The head coach added that seeing those big game situations will help as the Panthers are scheduled to face tough competition from District 2-6A.

Permian had success against district opponents last year, recording a 13-3 mark in league games and looked stronger in games that had higher stakes.

When the Panthers needed to defeat Wolfforth Frenship to claim the district title outright, multiple players stepped up to help secure wins.

Peyton Gregory learned how to be a brotherhood through playing in those situations and he wants to pass it down to some of the Panthers’ newcomers.

“That’s what we’re trying to teach these younger kids,” Gregory said. “We lost a lot of senior leadership and us seniors this year, we’re really trying to chase that.”

To prepare for the road ahead, the Panthers will be facing strong opponents in various nondistrict tournaments and matchups.

Some of their most notable showdowns will take place in trips to tournaments in San Marcos and Midland.

Criswell and his team are hoping that scheduling those games early will help when District 2-6A play begins.

The head coach is expecting a tight competition from other district teams, similar to what the Panthers saw during before their playoff run last year.

“It reminds me, kind of like the Big 12 in men’s basketball,” Criswell said. “If you don’t play well on any given day, you’re likely to get beat.

“I think from top to bottom, everybody in our district is really good.”

The Panthers will officially begin their season against Victoria East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in tournament play in San Marcos.

Before that game, Permian got to see where its skill level currently lies in five scrimmages against Canyon Randall, Lubbock Coronado, Andrews, Hobbs (N.M.) and Lubbock-Cooper,

Criswell is hoping that sets a good foundation for his team to be playing in June.

“I really think those first few tournaments, where you’re staying overnight as a team, you really grow together,” Criswell said. “You’ll see guys start to play harder and start to play more together, develop the brotherhood that we’ve tried to develop here over the last four and a half years.”
