COLLEGE BASEBALL: Texas Tech opens NCAA Tournament with victory over Army

LUBBOCK The Texas Tech baseball team opened up the NCAA Tournament on a good note by pulling away for a 6-3 victory over Army at the Lubbock Regional Friday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders (37-15 overall) were led by a pair of home runs by shortstop Cal Conley: a two-run home run in the bottom of the third followed by a solo shot in the fifth.  Braxton Fulford also had a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Texas Tech.

Tim Simoes and Jeremiah Adams had two hits and each drove in a run to lead Army (28-25).

Chase Hampton earned the victory by striking out seven and allowing two runs in six innings. Former Odessa College pitcher Connor Queen allowed one run in two innings of relief, while Micah Dallas pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the save.

Texas Tech will face the winner of UCLA and North Carolina, who are scheduled to play later Friday, in a winner’s bracket game Saturday.
